Stay healthy on vacation with these 10 items. And if you need a doctor, we’re here 24/7!
Bathing suit packed? Check. Favorite playlists downloaded? Done. Out-of-office messenger set? You bet! If you’re going through a checklist like this right now, then you might be getting ready to head out of town for spring break. Before you hit the slopes or surf, here are 10 things to pack that can help you have a fun and healthy trip:
- Medications: You want to take at least two extra days’ worth of medicines in case your return is delayed. Also, take a copy of your prescriptions so that you can get them refilled if anything happens to your supply.
- First aid kit: In addition to antiseptic wipes, antibiotic ointment, and assorted bandages, you may want to add a few basic over-the-counter medications such as antacid, pain reliever, antidiarrheal, decongestant, and antihistamine. You can also throw in a couple pairs of latex gloves in case you have to care for someone else. Contact Teladoc if you have questions about setting up a first aid kit.
- Petroleum jelly or cocoa butter: Petroleum jelly (commonly called Vaseline®) is one of the most versatile skin care products around. You can use it not only as a moisturizer and makeup remover, but also to treat minor cuts and burns and protect skin from the wind. Cocoa butter is another moisturizer/skin protectant that doubles as an effective hair conditioner.
- Water bottle: Staying hydrated is a cardinal rule when you’re traveling or active, especially if you’re in the sun. You can find collapsible water bottles in a variety of sizes that easily fit in your carry-on (just make sure they’re empty before you go through airport security).
- Sunglasses: Bright sunlight is harsh on the eyes; if you wear contact lenses, glare reflected off snow or sand can almost seem blinding. In addition to packing your good shades, consider taking a “throw-away” pair for when you’re out on a jet-ski or boat. You can also attach a colorful, floating eyewear retainer.
- SPF 15+ sunblock and lip balm: Again, whether you’re on the ocean or atop a mountain, sunscreen is your skin’s best outdoor companion. If you sweat or get wet, reapply as needed. Since any skin type can burn when overexposed to the sun’s UV rays, your safest bet is to slather on the sunblock 30 minutes before heading outdoors, even on cloudy days.
- Hand sanitizer: You’ll be surprised how indispensable a small bottle of hand sanitizer can become when you’re traveling. The last thing you need is to be waylaid with a cold while on vacation. Attach the bottle to your backpack with a retractable lanyard so that you can get to it any time.
- Disinfectant spray: If you’re bunking with friends or staying in a budget hotel, a spray disinfectant will make life — and the air — so much fresher, cleaner, and more pleasant for everyone. You can find sample size cans and bottles in the travel toiletries section.
- Proper outer wear: You’ll want a comfortable pair of walking shoes, at least one hat to shade yourself from the sun or keep your noggin warm, and a light jacket regardless of your location — even the desert can get cool at night. If you’re planning to spend a lot of time around the pool, a pair of shower shoes will help protect you from athlete’s foot.
- Teladoc: This is the easiest thing to pack and weighs absolutely nothing! For fingertip access to medical assistance any time, just download Teladoc’s mobile app to any Android or Apple device.
Important tip: Pack a change of clothes and the important items listed here in your carry-on luggage. If Cancun is your destination but your bags end up visiting Cleveland, you can still enjoy your vacation as soon as you hit the ground (remember to keep toiletries in TSA-approved travel-size containers).
